MSP430F1111A: Program burning issue

Dear TI Engineer,

We have used MSP430F1111AIDWR in one of our projects, and it was used normally before. However, during the production of this batch, we encountered a problem of program burning, with a defect rate of 8%.

The schematic is as below:

The program burning port is J4, and its connection pins with MSP430F1111AIDWR are shown in the table below.

1(TST)	PIN1(TST)
2(TDO)	PIN20(TDO)
3(TMS)	Not use
4(TCK)	Not use
5(RST/NMI)	PIN7(RST/NMI)
6(GND)	PIN4(GND)
7(VCC)	Not use(Powered by external 3V)
8(TDI)	Not use

We attempted a cross experiment and found that the program burning issue followed the chip. Do you have any suggestion for this issue?

Hi Lumina,
Some questions regarding your current application:
1. In what way are you programming the devices? Based on your comments, it seems to be Spy-bi wire but I would to confirm.
2. What do you mean by "not use" in your table? The signals are being connected to J4, so I'm not 100% sure what you mean by this.

The parts connected to RST/NMI would appear to be not as recommended in the user guide. Which is a 47K resistor to Vcc and no capacitor.

Other MSP430s that recommend a capacitor limit it to 10nF.

Yes, The burning device is a self-made burning circuit board provided by our customer, using Spy-bi wire.

"Not use "means that the 3-pin (TMS), 4-pin (TCK), and 8-pin (TDI) of J4 on the product are not connected to the testing equipment. The internal wiring is shown in the following figure.

Hi Lumina,
Looking into the MSP430 Programming With the JTAG Interface (Table 2-14. MSP430F1xx, MSP430F2xx, MSP430F4xx, MSP430Gxx JTAG Features), I noticed this device doesn't support Spy-Bi Wire. Maybe you could use the clock signal and the Input signal to somehow make it work, but this device doesn't have the DIO line. Can you share how are you using Spy-Bi Wire to program the devices?
