MSP-FET: MSP-FET needs recovery, recovery failed

I just bought a brand new MSP-FET and attempted to use it to flash my MSP430G2230. When attempting to debug, I got this error:

"Error initializing emulator:
One of the connected MSP-FETs / eZ-FETs debuggers needs recovery. Select 'Recover' to start the recovery process.

Note: Only one MSP-FET / eZ-FET debugger can be connected to your system during recovery."

When I click Recover, I get

"MSP430: Error initializing emulator: MSP-FET / eZ-FET recovery failed"

I was on CCS 12.8.1, but I tried this on CCS 9.1 as well and got the same issue. In my Device Manager, I do not see the MSP-FET on Port/COM or USBs, which is odd but obviously CCS still recognizes it. I also believe that the right drivers are downloaded.

I've seen a lot of people post about this issue but I haven't really found a consistent solution if any.

Should I try an even older CCS version?

Hi,

Since you cannot see the Port in Device Manager, I think you can firstly refer to the following thread to see whether it can give you some ideas to fix it, then to check whether the problem still exist. Hope it would be helpful to you.

As an update, I used another new MSP-FET on both versions of CCS, and got this error
"Error initializing emulator:
A firmware update is required for the MSP430 Debug Interface (MSP-FET430UIF / MSP-FET / eZ-FET). Click the "Update" button to update the firmware and launch your debug session (this may require several update steps).

DO NOT UNPLUG THE INTERFACE DURING THE UPDATE."

I remember this happening with the first MSP-FET, and I allowed the firmware update. Since that I would get the recover error.

For this new MSP-FET I try to ignore the error but it still won't start the debug.

This is so frustrating! These things are so expensive! And this seems to be a very common problem!

With the new MSP-FET, I see the device pop up in my Device Manager as a USB Composite Device. I am going to uninstall and reinstall the drivers.
