cc430 + sky65116 integration and testing with SA430

I'm currently building a board that integrates cc430F5137 with sky65116 Power Amplifier for 433MHz range.

I'm referring to RF-CC430-65313-MVK (900MHz)  but having hard times since the design wiki only contains schematics and not detailed BOM.

To test my board i'm thinking of using the new SA430 analyzer but i don't know how to properly test the output from sky65116 power amplifier directly to SA430.

I think i need an attenuator between PA and SA430 but do not know how to find the value for it.

Any advise on integration and test setup will be very much appreciated.

  • Hi Song,

    the output power of SKY65116 may reach about 2W (33dBm), it is out ot the scale of most standard equipments (network analyzer/ spectrum analyzer) and may pernanately damage the equipments.

    You'd better first build a evaluation board for the amplifer separately and try to find (or buy) a high power attenuator and a high power load (you can ask Aglilent or R/S or some local providers and i also give you a reference company http://www.pasternack.com/default.aspx?) 

    and please make sure the output of SKY65116 is always loaded during power on.

    finally, if you or your engineer don't have enought RF experience,  please prepare enough samples.

    I'll setup DUT as you advised.

    But i wonder is there any way we can protect PA while the PA is not loaded but the power of PA is on?

    I think i need some feedback system but trying to find a starting point on that!

  • Hi,

    As you know high power PA will be easily damaged by power reflection when the output is not well matched and high VSWR, and moreover, self-excitation may also happen.

    one way is connect the 50OHM load when power on.

    If using Network analyzer or spectrum analyzer, please make sure the output power is DC blocked and well attenuated (using highpower attenuator) below the equipment limitation

    And actually the easiest way is put the antenna connected, but you may be in a 2W radiation field during debugging and it is not easy to measure the power
