MSP430G2755: MSP430G2755- Spy-Bi wire programming issue

Part Number: MSP430G2755
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UNIFLASH

Hi TI team,

We have designed custom board using MSP430G2755. We have given Spy-Bi wire programming option on our board. We connected RST/NMI and TEST pin to MSP-FET430UF debugger/programmer. We have followed recommanded for RST pin pull up.

When we flash the MCU, we are getting unknown device error. Following is the programming section image:

Any clue what could be the issue?

  • Hi Hitesh,

Here is the recommended signal connections from the MSP430 Hardware Tools User's Guide:

    Some things I would check:

    • Ensure stable power is being supplied to the device
    • Check for proper signal integrity, i.e using short cables for connections
    • How are you attempting to flash the device? (software, etc)
    • Have you tried probing the lines to observe their behavior?
    • Do you have any other boards or programmers that work?

    Best,

    Owen

  • Hi Owen,

Thanks for quick response. If you see our schematic it is matching with the your given reference. We are not using eFuse functionality so no connection between TEST/VPP to TEST/SWTCLK.

We tested the same programmer and wiring length with other MSP430F series board and it is working fine.

We checked the power and it is stable 3.3V and probed the signals on oscilloscope and seeing activity on both the lines.

Is it must to have 1nF cap on RST line? Also, can you confirm MSP-FET430UF debugger able to program the MSP430G2755 MCU?

    Thanks,

    Hitesh

  • SBW works better (fastest) without any cap on target device RESET pin so your setup is fine (regarding SBW interface). You are using MSP-FET430UIF? If answer is yes, than maybe it is older combination of PC side software / FET firmware (msp430.dll) that does not support G2xx familly.

  • Hi Hitesh,

Sorry for the delay in response, there was recently a holiday in the US.

The capacitor is not required on the RST pin, it is a recommendation to filter noise and maintain signal integrity. It may be worth testing if a capacitor helps.

The MSP-FET430UIF is compatible with all flash-based MSP430 devices.

Ensure you have the correct device selected within CCS/IAR/Uniflash.

Is the MSP430F series board a custom board or an EVM from TI?

    Best,

    Owen

  • Hi Owen,

The issue is solved. It was with wrong value on the RST pin capacitor. Thank you for your help. We can mark this ticket as resolved.
