WHY MAKE THIS FORUM SO INCONVENIENT?

I joined this forum recently, with the intent of helping out where i can, I set it up so that I received notification by email, these have been flooding my inbox for the last couple of weeks, and I have replied to several, only to pay closer attention today, and realise that Ti email these from a  'noreply' address. what is the sense in that, It is counter productive if their aim is to allow the community at large to help each other, thus removing much of the support burden, and its added costs from the shoulders of Ti, so if we are going to do your work unpaid at least make it simpler for us. i don't want to have to log in to the forums every time I see a help request i can deal with, it isn't at all convenient for me. people complain that most posts here go unanswered. It's no wonder when Ti make it such a pain in the butt to do so.

Hi Onestone, simply uncheck the box before to post and edit all setting about notify by email on your profile. TI has nothing to do with what you choosed at subscription.

I've set my browser to enter my login automatically.  I can click on the e-mails and go directly to the post in question.

I have had good results with TI apps engineers answering my questions promptly.  If they don't, you can send a link to your unanswered question to an FAE or a distributor that franchises TI.  So far this has always resulted in an answer, but TI almost always answers my questions posted here w/o local FAE or sales channel involvement.

Don't give up yet.  TI does reply to questions here.

  • Notifications are notifications. Nothing more. I use them to keep a copy of own forum post or replies to threads I posted in, when they contain something I want to keep.
Also, each notification mail contains a link to the forum thread. Whether you click on the link or click on the reply button, makes not much if a difference, except that on the forum link, you'll have access to the whoel thread.

I don' thave to log-in each time. The forum can keep the login if you want. It's just a matter of configuration.

In the very most cases, these requests are of the "RTFM" type, or asking something that has been answered just yesterday. "use the search function" is an action that often results in immediate answer to the problem. And of course those 'I want code from your immediately and for free' posts go right into the spam wastebasket.
The rest is answered if someone has an answer, an are not answered if nobody has an answer. All other questions usually get an answer within hours.

(however, the search function could still make use of some improvements, but it's much better than two years before)

So just check the 'Remember Me' box - and it will log you in automatically!

All the forums I know of work that way. (The only exception is the ST forum - where you always have to manually type your password).

  • Most of the replies miss the point. I'm going through my emails, I come across one from the Ti forum, and I have something positive to contribute, but I don't want to go to another app, another window, i simply want to reply to an email, the other groups and forums I'm a member of allow this. I am not coming here seeking help, I'm offering help. Allowing an email response to a post is a trivial thing.

Well,I want many things. But in this case, I don't see a difference between clicking on 'reply' or clicking on the provided link that takes you to the forum thread.

However, accepting mails as source for forum answers completely nullifies the effect of a required login. Maybe 'the other groups' don't have problems wit this unsafety, or are mailing list anyway, where this security problem is inherent part of the concept.

Imagine what happens if someone answers to a thread with your name and offends all the people here. You wouldn't like that and blame TI for it.
Mails are so easy to forge. In all those mailing lists I am, it wouln't cost me more than a minute to send a mail that appears to everyone as coming from a different member of the list. And nobody would have a chance to detect it, because of course the distributed mail doesn't contain the information about the original sending IP etc anymore.

Allowing email response to anything is a trivial way to allow any kind of fraudulence. Unless you force all people to sign their mails with an encrypted key (e.g. PGP) that is stored int heir user profile.
And all this effort, so that you don't have to have a browser window pop up instead of the reply window of your mail program.

    I'm sorry, I don't feel sorry for you ;)

    OK - sorry.

I suspect that the opposite may be true?

For a start, how do you link the incoming email to the correct forum thread? And how do you ensure that users don't breaj that link?

Then there's all the plethora of different email clients, email editors, formatting options, etc, etc,...

Maybe someone from TI will enlighten us... (althought this is not really the right forum for that)

This forum responds reasonably fast, has never given me error messages, has no widgets/apps/scripts that crash or hog the CPU, is reasonably intuitive, does not try to be an everything-to-everyone engineering community, and is well monitored by TI apps engineers.  IMHO that puts it at the very top of websites.  It has other nice touches such as "Paste from Word" and automatically adding links to product pages for TI part numbers.  The biggest thing, though, it that it works reliably and TI provides such detailed responses.

  • For me there are personal reasons I won't go into why it is inconvenient to switch around different windows. I also don't like the childish 'ranking' system they use, so for me it's probably time to get out of here

  • Onestone,

As Jens mentions setting up an email list for public forums requires additional security and as well addition protection from spam. This is something we have constantly reviewed but have yet to see a solution that would meet our requirements. There are options out there but many don't offer the type of spam protection we would want and need as we don't want to run everyone off if they were to be constantly hit with spam. We haven't ruled this out we just need to find a solution that will work along these lines.

Beyond that we are constantly looking at any way to improve the ease of use for E2E and anything we can do to help make the experience better. If you have things like this you would like to see it is great and very important to us to hear that. We greatly value your feedback and all of our members here. If something isn't working for you we want to hear it and look at any way we can to address. While we do have system limitations and have to keep in mind the overall impact as any one change will hit everyone else we still look to do what we can.

For the ranking system is there anything specific that you don't like about it? It's a completely optional and to the side part of E2E. You can post and answer questions without ever having to worry about it or know it's there.

Above all I'm sorry to hear about your experience here so far and again thank you for your feedback. I do hope you change your mind and decide to stick around as we have a great resource here and a community filled with amazing individuals. I'm always around as well to do anything I can to help out.

Hopefully you saw my reply to you in a different thread here:

  •  Hi Blake, sorry not to be useful with this thread, I add my wish to have check box "Email me replies to this post" unchecked is this possible now altering somewhere setting or can be a feature to be voted for? I have to uncheck every post and I feel annoying.

     Thank you

  • Roberto,

For following threads you can subscribe to receive/not-receive email alerts for:

    • New threads only for a forum or forums you are subscribed to
    • All news threads and all posts for a forum or forums you are subscribed to
    • Ability to subscribe to replies to a specific thread
    • Ability to unsubscribe to replies to a specific thread
    • Ability to subscribe/unsubscribe to a blog and get all new blog posts
    • Ability to subscribe/unsubscribe to all comments for a blog post
To see which forums and blogs you are currently subscribed to you can browse to your profile and then click on the "Subscriptions" tab to see everything at a glance and as well opt out of any.
For individual threads in muting them. Browse to that thread and then in the top right under "Options" click on "Email unsubscribe from replies to this forum thread." This is applicable if you have: A) posted on that thread or created it B) set to get all posts and replies for forums you subscribe to. See below for a screenshot of this.
For changing the settings on whether you wish to get all new threads and replies or just new threads go to: Settings > Site Options
Here under "Forum Posts Notification" click on "New Threads Only" if you only wish to get new threads for forums you subscribe to or click on "All Posts" to get all new threads and posts (replies). Once you have selected your update be sure to then scroll down to save your updated settings.

Outside of these scenarios I've covered is there any other scenarios you would like to see for either opting in and/or out of threads/other?
    Blake
