CCS v4 and v5 - USB FET firmware

Hello,

I am working on 2 projects, one using CCSv4 and one with CCSv5.  I'm using the same USB FET debugger and when I started the project with CCS v5, CCS upgraded the firmware on the USB FET debugger.  Since I'm keeping track of revisions for my projects and need to keep each one in its own CCS version, is there a way to "downgrade" the USB FET firmware if needed?

Basically there is something going on with the MSP-FETU430IF that is causing it not to work with the v4 version, but it does work with the v5.  I plugged it in and it had to be upgraded (firmware) to work with 4.2.4, and now it appears to work fine.  Anyway to downgrade the firmware?  I believe the one I have got upgraded to work with v5 and it is not backward compatible.

Any feedback or input is welcomed and appreciated!

Thanks again!

Paul

  • With CCSv5.1 (I think you have that as v5 was not meant to be used for MSP430) there comes a downgrade utility.

You can find it under Programs -> Texas Instruments -> MSP-FET430UIF Debug Interface -> MSP-FET430UIF v3 to v2 downgrade

There is more information available at the wiki

If you have two UIFs available I would use one for CCSv4.2 and one for CCSv5.1 - the downgrade is a bit of a hassle. And here in the forum are several reports that something went wrong during up- or downgrade and the UIF was bricked.

  • I too just went through the hassle of upgrading (temporarily) to CCSv5.x and then needing to continue using CCSv4 to support legacy code before making the jump fully to v5.  The suggestion to use the "MSP-FET430UIF v3 to v2 downgrade" worked well for me. For anyone else who stumbles upon this thread, the step of reconnecting (after it prompts you to disconnect) seems to hang for a few seconds to a minute, but wait it out as the application continued to perform the downgrade and will prompt you to enter a 'y' to close the application when it is finished.
