FInding out the RAM and FLASH usage CCSv4 MSP430F5528

Hi, I would like to know hoa I can find out the RAM and FLASH usage with CCSv4 once a build is complete. I have the map file, but it always shows

RAM 00002400 00002000 0000162a 000009d6 RWIX

FLASH 00004400 0000bb80 0000bb80 00000000 RWIX

Does this mean all my available flash is being used? I am not very sure how to read the map file. Is there any other way of knowing the total usage in CCSv4? Or is there any TI provided or 3rd party tool for this?

  • Hmm depending on the device you use there might be another entry:

      FLASH2 00010000 00015c00 00000000 00015c00 RWIX

It's at the bottom of the memory configuration table (for my map file at least), other than that you are reading the map file just fine. So FLASH and FLASH2 together will tell you your flash usage.

RAM usage is a bit of a trouble - for the stack there is a reserved amount of bytes (set somewhere in the project/linker settings), but it doesn't actually know how much of the stack will be used, or if the stack reserved will be enough. So RAM usage is always a bit of a guess and it's quite hard to find out if a stack overflow occurred or not.

There was a discussion about RAM usage some time ago - try a search, it might be interesting for you.

    Edit:

Just saw the device you used (reading is really a beneficial skill...) and tried a mini project, and there also was the FLASH2 entry showing up at the very bottom of the memory configuration table.

  • @Bernhard Weller,

Thanks a lot. In IAR EWB, the map file shows total usage. But not in CCS. Anyway, I got the sectti tool in cg_xml package. This with ofd430.exe as said in the document,

    ofd430.exe -x something.out | sectti.exe gives a detailed summary. This serves my purpose.
