CAPTIVATE-FR2676: Capacitive Sensor Noise Issue with External Wiring – Guidance Request

I hope you are doing well.

We are currently working with the CAPTIVATE development setup from Texas Instruments. Instead of using the BSWP demo panel, we have integrated industrial textile-based capacitive sensors into our system, and the sensing functionality itself is working well.

However, we are facing an issue related to the sensor connections. Since the textile sensors are connected via external wires, we observe that the measured capacitance changes significantly when a human hand or body comes near the connecting wires. This suggests that the wiring is highly sensitive to external interference.

We would appreciate your guidance on the following points:

  • Are there any specific types of cables (e.g., shielded or coaxial) recommended to minimize external capacitive coupling on sensor lines?

  • Is there a recommended method for shielding or insulating the connecting wires to reduce environmental influence?

  • Can this sensitivity be reduced or compensated through configuration in the TI Captivate software (e.g., filtering, threshold tuning, or guard channel implementation)?

  • Are there any best practices for routing or grounding in such setups?

Your suggestions will be very helpful for improving the robustness of our system.
