MSP430FR5994: Current consumption in sleep mode is inconsistent

Part Number: MSP430FR5994

Hello there,

We are making a battery powered LPM device for industrial application using MSP430FR5994 controller

Purpose of this device,
A.    On power-up, initialization and data fetch from peripheral devices, then get into sleep
B.    Hourly wake-up and perform specific action then get into sleep
C.    On interrupt, clear and acknowledge it then get into sleep

Major conntected peripheral device(s),
GSM Modem, External RTC, SD Card, OLED, Sensors

Current consumption in sleep mode is inconsistent
We tried available LPM mode(s) in the given micro-controller and found LPM3 is the most suitable for our application. After many attempts, we achieved 80 to 100 microAmps current consumption and stick to the same.

But after days of observation we realized, current consumption isn't consistent, variation is huge i.e upto 600 microAmps.
We have 3 identical devices, but current consumption behaviour is different.

Before getting into sleep mode, we are doing power cut-off of few devices and gpio conversion, then enter to LPM3

Now we are stuck because of this current consumption issue

Please suggest any modification needs to be done w.r.t sequence or debug method to identify the root cause.

Feel free to ask, if any further information required

Thanks

  • I am assuming that the currents stated are for only the MSP430. If not, then you probably need to do something to check on the current demands of those other devices.

The most likely reason for inconsistent current demand in LPM3 is not paying attention to section 1.6 of the guide on what to do with unused pins.

Also, you may not get LPM3 if some module is requesting SMCLK. Although that would not explain all of that 600 uA variation. In any case, current for the MSP430 in LPM3 should be under 10uA.
