TMDSEMU200-U: Need help with adaptors for this programmer

Part Number: TMDSEMU200-U

We have the TMDSEMU200-U programmer - it comes with three adaptor boards for different sets of pins - there is an adaptor that appears at first to be the JTAG connector that we need to plug into the board to program - however the female holes seem too large - and the connector just wiggles back and forth on the pins of the board but does not have any snug connection. One person thinks it is because this adaptor is damaged, another person says it is not damaged it is the wrong one. But the other two in the box are totally different sizes and not correct. I can tell you that the other TI programmer we have the MSP-430 - the black one - the JTAG connector on that is correct for our board - so basically we need that same connection on the TMDSEMU200-U programmer - but are unsure what is going on... if this adaptor is damaged, can we purchase another from you? Or are we forced to buy the entire programming unit kit for $400+?

  • Hi Wade,

Thanks for reaching out. Based on your description, the adapter is likely not damaged - you're experiencing a connector pin pitch mismatch.

The TMDSEMU200-U ships with three different adapters with varying pin pitches:

    • 20-pin TI JTAG connector (0.1" / 2.54mm pitch - standard spacing)
    • 14-pin TI JTAG connector (0.1" / 2.54mm pitch)
    • cTI 20-pin connector (0.05" / 1.27mm pitch - compact/fine spacing)

Your target board likely uses the 0.05" pitch connector, but you're attempting to use the 0.1" pitch adapter. This explains why the pins wiggle and don't fit snugly, while your MSP-430 programmer connects properly.

    Solution:

Check your kit for the cTI 20-pin adapter - it will have noticeably tighter pin spacing (0.05"/1.27mm). This is likely one of the other adapters you mentioned.

If the correct adapter is missing or damaged, you do not need to purchase the entire programmer kit. TI sells replacement cables separately:

    • Part Number: XDS-CABLE-PACK (contains all three standard adapters)
    • Individual adapter cables are also available

    Recommended Next Steps:

    1. Verify your target board's JTAG connector pin pitch (measure the spacing between pins)
    2. Check all three adapters in your TMDSEMU200-U kit for the tighter 0.05" pitch version
    3. If needed, contact TI Support to order replacement adapter cables

Please let me know if you need assistance identifying the correct adapter or ordering replacement cables.

    Best Regards,
    Zackary Fleenor
