What is Wolverine?

Is “Wolverine” just for investor’s eyes? Is there any relevance to engineers?

  • Not yet! Just a teaser.

  • OCY:

If you search "Wolverine" at ti.com, you will find the page that describes what it is:

TI's new "Wolverine" microcontroller platform slashes power by 50 percent versus any other microcontroller in the industry

Now you can see how Wolverine got its name, and what it is!

Enhanced DNA: MSP430™ pioneered ultra-low-power, and Wolverine is the next evolution in a system architecture that enables the lowest power on the planet.

Ultra-low-leakage process: This unique technology offers at least a 10x improvement in leakage and maximizes power efficiency across all components of the silicon.

Ultra-low power FRAM: Consumes 250x less energy per bit as compared to flash, has nearly infinite write endurance, and has the flexibility to function as program or data memory for distinct ease of use.

Create a smarter, battery-free planet: With advanced power management, CPU, intelligent peripherals, and precision analog, Wolverine is a platform that enables easy system design to make battery life a concern of the past.

  • Since I saw X-Men as movie sometime ago I came to the ideas where that name has it's origins. I found one occurene in a dictionary as an animal and at least in german it's called "Vielfraß" - a name which suggests a very hungry animal (which is not true anyway). But MSPs in general and the newer FRAM series especially are not very hungry at all, so I found this codename a bit funny ;-)

    Funny indeed.

But I guess, the German name does not refer to the amount of food it consumes, but rather the wide variety of food it accepts. So it can live where other would starve. And now the name fits again :) (it just isn't that obvious)

  • Right - and new DNA from the presentation refers to the injection of liquid metal, ehm, fram memory into the mcu core ;-)

  • According to Wikipedia:

“The wolverine has a reputation for ferocity and strength out of proportion to its size, with the documented ability to kill prey many times its size. … This requirement for large territories brings wolverines into conflict with human development, and hunting and trapping further reduce their numbers, causing them to disappear from large parts of their former range; attempts to have them declared an endangered species have met with little success.”

Notice that gulo gulo is disappearing and people do not care to save them.

  • So is the wolverine significantly different than the exisiting FRAM chips?  I didn't see much difference after reading

    what information is available.
