MSPM33C321A-Q1: MSPM33C321 and MSPM0G3507 Debugger with OpenOCD support

Part Number: MSPM33C321A-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSPM0G3507, MSPM33C321A

Hi team,

which OpenOCD Debuggers are supported by both M0G3507 as well as M33C321A?

E.g. J-Link, BlackMagic OCD

I know J-Link is supported. A web search also returns results for TI's XDS110 with OpenOCD, but please confirm.

Please confirm all compatible debuggers with OpenOCD support.

Thanks

  • Hello Til,

I reviewed the OpenOCD debug probe options for both the MSPM0G3507 and MSPM33C321A.
The following are the main compatible options:
    • XDS110 : Supported with OpenOCD for both devices. TI’s OpenOCD configuration files for the MSPM0 and MSPM33 LaunchPads use the XDS110 interface directly, so this is the most straightforward TI-supported option.
    • SEGGER J-Link :Supported by OpenOCD over SWD, and both the MSPM0G3507 and MSPM33C321A are supported by J-Link.
    • CMSIS-DAP v1/v2 probes : OpenOCD supports CMSIS-DAP over SWD, so these should also work with both devices. However, specific CMSIS-DAP probes may need to be validated if features beyond normal debug/programming, such as device recovery, are required.

I would not consider Black Magic Probe a standard OpenOCD option. Black Magic normally implements its own GDB server within the probe and communicates directly with GDB rather than operating through OpenOCD.

One additional note for the MSPM33C321A: MSPM33 support currently requires TI’s OpenOCD distribution/fork rather than a generic upstream OpenOCD installation. I recommend using TI OpenOCD v1.5.0 or newer for MSPM33C321A support.
Therefore, for a single probe that can be used with OpenOCD across both MSPM0G3507 and MSPM33C321A, the primary options I would recommend evaluating are XDS110, J-Link, and CMSIS-DAP.

    Regards,

    Benedict Jojo
