I have 2 nearly identical computers - both running Windows XP SP3. I have installed CCS v5 on both.

One computer works fine with CCS v5 and the MSP430 LaunchPad.

The second refuses to connect to the LaunchPad - the error message is:

Error Initializing emulator: Could not find MSP-FET430UIF on specified Com Port.

When I plug in the LaunchPad:

The computer that works shows a Texas Instruments XDS560 PCI JTAG Emulator in the Device Manager Window.

The computer that doesn't work shows a USB Human Interface Device for the LaunchPad driver - Not a TI XDS560 PCI JTAG Emulator.

My question is:

Is the XDS560 PCI JTAG Emulator driver required to program and debug with the LaunchPad?

If so, where can I get it, how do I install it, and how do I convince my second computer that it should not use the generic HID driver?

Hi,

normally when you install CCS the drivers get also installed and should recognize your launchpad. Try to get the latest version of CCS and try reinstalling, maybe that solves your problem. There is a new 5.1 release from february and a 5.2 beta (which must not be installed over an exisiting 5.1 installation). One thing I noticed is, that when installing a new 5.x release MSP430Ware and Grace are not installed by default and I had to do this via CCS manually.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried re-installing CCS several times. No help.

I have noticed the following while watching the Device Manager:

When I plug in the LaunchPad on my working system, Device Manager adds "MSP430 Application UART (com5)" under "PORTS".

When I plug in the LaunchPad on non-working system, Device Manager adds "MSP430 Application UART (com3) under "PORTS" - AND "HID Compliant Device" and "USB Human Interface Device" under "Human Interface Device".

Could the HID driver be blocking access when I try to run CCS? I tried uninstalling the HID driver, but Windows keeps re-installing it.

It is possible that on your non-working system some software is hijacking the port. e.g. a 3rd party mouse driver or a PDA syncing software. THen the port is not available when the MSP software tries to establish a connection.

I had the same problem

Could not find MSP-FET430UIF on specified COM port.

.For some reason, rebooting my PC seems to have fixed it. Fingers crossed.

Try again by changing the port assigned to "MSP430 Application UART". you can change it , through " Device Manager>Ports>properties>port settings>Advanced ....then change COM port assigned ....then OK ....this might work ..
