IAR does not recognize MSP-FET430UIF after CCEssentials installation

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320VC5505, MSP-FET, CCSTUDIO

Hey all,

A few weeks ago I installed CCEssentials v4 which came with my TMS320VC5505 eZdsp board (which, by the way, is a really cool and affordable dsp beginners tool) into a fresh clean install of WinXP SP3, and yesterday when I needed to do some MSP430 programming I installed IAR workbench version 4.20.  The problem is that when my MSP-FET430UIF is connected to the computer, it is recognized as a  Texas Instruments XDS560 PCI JTAG Emulator.  Because of this, when I am using IAR to program the MSP430, IAR is not to program the MSP because is cannot find an MSP430 programmer.  I have tried uninstalling the Texas Instruments XDS560 PCI JTAG Emulator in the Device Manager, and I have also tried uninstalling CCEssentials, but each time I connect the MSP-FET430UIF, the computer still recognizes it as a  Texas Instruments XDS560 PCI JTAG Emulator instead of the MSP-FET430UIF.  Any and all suggestions would be welcome.

hi spark, I'm guessing you mean CCStudio v4, right?  there's actually no such thing as CCE v4 and CCE didn't support the TMS320VC5505 (only MSP430).

did you try forcing a driver update? just a thought...

    1. go to the device manager
    2. selecting "Update Driver" for the MSP-FET430UIF
    3. install from a specific location
    4. browse to  UIF driver (on the default CCS install, it's in "C:\Program Files\Texas Instruments\ccsv4\emulation\drivers\msp430\USB_FET_XP")

I just looked over the troubleshooting steps, and the problem does not lie in the MSP-FET430UIF hardware because it still works just fine on my laptop.  But, the problem is driver related in the sense that I never got the chance to install the MSP-FET drivers.  Because of the CCStudio installation, the first time I connected the MSP_FET to my computer it was immediately recognized, and the drivers from the CCStudio installation were automatically loaded for it without any chance of my intervention.  After connecting the MSP-FET, in Device Manager, under Ports(COM&LPT)  I see the MSP-FET430UIF - VCP(COM3), but instead of seeing Multi-port Serial Adapters ==> MSP-FET430UIF (TI USB FET) Adapter like what I see with my laptop, I am seeing only Texas Instruments XDS560 PCI JTAG Emulator.

In IAR, when I try to Download and Debug, I immediately (the moment I press CTRL+D) get this error message:

    Fatal error: Failed to initialize.
    Check if hardware connected.
    Check if drivers are installed.
    Try to restar the computer.
Tools using the parallel port are not supported on Windows Vista

    Session aborted!

You are correct, I meant CCStudio.  I did try to force a driver update, and this is where Windows gets in the way because Windows tells me that it will not update the drivers because it couldn't find a better match for the hardware than the software that is currently installed.

I had this same problem last year when I considered switching to CCEssentials for MSP programming.  After a little while I decided I preferred IAR, but when I went to switch back to IAR, I couldn't use the MSP-FET for the same reasons as now.  I solved the problem by reinstalling my operating system and IAR (I keep a clean install image saved on a second drive, so this only takes a few minutes), but now I want to have both CCStudio and IAR installed at the same time.

My next step is that I will reload my clean backup image, and I will try installing IAR with the MSP-FET first and then I will install CCStudio to see if this helps.  When I get around to trying this, I will post the results.

  • not sure if this is related but there is here's another thread with a similar problem.  in their case, a joystick is trying to use an emulator's driver.
