Problem with MSP-FET430UIF

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F2272

Hi

It works fine and i don't find these problems on my machine since I am going to target on programming with MSP430F2272. The problem comes out with driver intalling about MSP-FET430UIF.

It seems i have two "types" of JTAG. (MSP-FET430UIF and MSP-FETU430IF).Here, MSP-FETU430IF cannot find on the TI’s product list. I try to use the drives which downloaded associated with CCE V3.1, but both with the error in following screenshot.

When i tried to use ¨MSP430_USB_DRIVERS_v3¨, the MSP-FETU430IF works with driver, but MSP-FET430UIF did not. The one worked is still with problem ¨No USB FET was found¨ when i try to debug the code.

Hope i descriped everything need, so can anyone know what's going on?

Thanks in advance

Kebin

  • For the driver question, the TI USB FET no longer shows up under Multi-Port Serial Adapter. It did with older versions of CCE but in the current versions (3.2.4.3.8 and higher) it no longer appears in the Device Manager. It only appears under COM&LPT Ports.

For the "No USB FET found" error, if an updated version of CCE such as SR1(3.2.4.3.8) was installed and used, the firmware on the FET was most likely updated to a newer version, and this will not work with an older version. In this case the MSP430.dll should be updated to the newer version. Please contact TI support for a copy of the dll if you wish to continue to use CCE 3.1 SP3. If you are willing to update to SR1, that will automatically install the updated drivers and resolve the issue.

The same behavior will occur if you have CCE 3.1 and CCS v4 on the same machine. In this case, you would need to make a backup copy of the existing dll in your CCE 3.1 \DebugServer\drivers directory and copy the updated ones from CCS v4 to that folder.

  • One quick comment here. Please note that when swapping MSP430.DLL files between different tools / versions, it is important to know that the MSP430.DLL file depends on another TI-supplied file called HIL.DLL. Therefore, these two files MSP430.DLL + HIL.DLL should only be swapped together (not just the MSP430.DLL).

  • My TI USB FET does not work with IAR 4.11 after I've done a CCE v4 evaluation.    I'd like to get back up and running soon and hopefully don't need to reformat my harddrive and reinstall everything (sorry about the sarcasm).

Is there a diagnostic tool (command line is OK) where I can check my FET and it's morass of dll's and files.

My system has Quadravox, CCE v4 and IAR 4.11 on it.    The FET when plugged into USB lights the red mode light, then that goes off and the green power light comes on and that's about all I have as a diagnostic.   I need to get IAR back working so a procedure and access to the necessary files to hack the install would be appreciated if someone has it.

    Thanks,

    Thom

  • Thom,

Did you copy over the msp430.dll and hil.dll from the CCS v4 install directory (C:\Program Files\Texas Instruments\ccsv4\DebugServer\drivers) to the IAR directory as suggested in the previous posts? This is necessary if you want to go back to CCE v3 or IAR after the firmware on the FET has been updated to a newer version by using CCS v4.

  • At this point my FET looks bricked - it fails to work in any of my dev environments.    I'm looking on the elpotronics site as there was another post about a magic reflashing tool.

  • Looks like I'm in the same boat here.  I have installed the latest TI (CCS4.0) and IAR (v4.21 + v4.21.3 patch) tools and now my USB-FET tool does not work.  I have copied the MSP430.dll and HIL.dll files form the CCS4.0 into the IAR 430/bin directory and it still does not work.  Any idea on what is the problem and what to try next.  Looks like it was a really bad idea trying to update to CCS4.0.

    Thanks,
    Tim Simerly

  • I did not have time to debug the problem further, though I've been back running with gnu, IAR and Quadravox.   The solution for me was I bought two more FET's and setup a dedicated development machine to better control the software environment and a separate (slower) test machine for trying out new tools such as CCE/CCS versions.

  • I have a similar problem.  After I installed the TI chronos development kit, my MSP-FET430UIF no longer works.  The device shows up in Device manager but when I try to use it in IAR EW430, I get the message

    FATAL ERROR

    Failed to initialize device

    Session Aborted.

I have uninstalled all the TI Chronos stuff and even uninstalled and reinstalled the MSP-FET430UIF to no avail.  I am dead in the water right now.

  • Hey Martin:

I don't remember this particular message that you are seeing, but wrt my previous problem, I was able to resolve it, but I had to go to the registry and remove any references (regedit from Start->Run button with XP) to the TI FET tool and then I was able to get it back working again.  The problem was that the registry still had some old references that was causing a conflict with the installation of the new tool.  Don't fully understand all the issues, but once I got rid of all the references to this device in the registry it started working again.  I hope this helps.

  • Martin,

Did Tim's suggestion help? When you say that you installed the Chronos software, do you mean that - you did "only" install the Chronos Package (Chronos-setup.exe from SLAC341) or did you also install IDEs (IAR or CCS) from the Chronos CD?

    Regards,
    Markus

  • Sorry I should have updated everyone today.  I installed the CCS software from the Chronos CD.  I did some reading on MSP-FET430UIF problems and decided to try and refresh the MSP430.dll and the HIL.DLL by installing the IAR Kickstart package.  After requiring a FW upload to the FET, it now seems to work correctly.  To be honest with you, I'm not quite sure exactly what happened, but I am happy to be up and running.....

I think it would be a very good idea for TI to keep their latest drivers available online.  It would make things a lot easier for everyone.

  • Hello,

I have a similar issue. At home I used an evaluation version of IAR (4.21) which updated my FET430UIF. Now I am not able to use it on a normal IAR 4.20 version at office. Could this dll updating may help?

    Best regards.

    Mich

  • It certainly sounds similar.  I would copy the MSP430.dll and the HIL.DLL from your home computer to your office.

    Marty

  • FYI, it works fine with the dll replacement. Thanks. Mich
