One MSP-FET430UIF works ... the other does not.

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430G2553

I think I have a bad MSP-FET430UIF, but I wanted to make sure there might not be somthing else causing this problem.  Perhaps someone has some ideas?

Here is my setup information:

  • Windows XP
  • CCSv5 (up-to-date)
  • Two MSP-FET430UIFs communicating with PC via USB.  (I only connect in one of them to the USB at a time... the other is used as a backup)
  • I have my own target board communicating with MSP-FET430UIF via 4-wire JTAG.  Target chip for this case is the MSP430G2553

Here are the symptoms:

  • Using CCSv5, I can successfully connect to one of the MSP-FET430UIFs.  I can debug my target board.  Everything is fine.  Let's call that the "good" unit.
  • When I unplug the "good" MSP-FET430UIF from the USB and plug in the "bad" unit, I get the message: Could not find MSP-FET430UIF on specified COM port
  • When I now unplug the "bad" unit (so that no units are plugged in via USB) I get the message Error initializing emulator:
    No USB FET was found
  • The "bad" unit does give the 3 red flashes, followed by the green light, so it's getting power.
  • Changing USB ports does not help.  It looks like the PC is communicating fine with the units ... (i.e. it's not USB related).
  • For whatever reason, FET-Pro430 does not want to communicate with either unit.  I remember being able to get that working sometime in the past, but it's certainly not working now.  The latest version download from them appears to be corrupted too?  Just tried this morning.

A couple other things that may or may not be related:

  •  I have the TI MSP GANG programmer installed.  That piece of equipment is still working as of this morning.  I hope the msp430.dll file with that is not causing problems somewhere else.  Just a thought.  I don't really know.
  • I can't get the MSP430UIF v3 to v2 downgrade program to work.  It complains with the same messages that CCSv5 does.
