Using USB programming tool for bare MCUs

I know this may be a weird question but I'm just hoping someone has a solution. I want to buy some F2012 MCUs and program them using the ez430 USB dev tool I have. The target board is pretty simple from what I've seen so this should not be a problem. The problem I have is getting the right signals from the ez430 tool.

I looked at the TPx pins exposed on the tool but they don't seem to offer the needed SBWTCK and SBWTDIO signals. So, the only other alternative I thought about is to use the small connector on the USB tool. The problem is that I don't want to bend the pins and I can't find a matching female connector so small (as the one on the target boards). Does anyone have any idea of how I can accomplish prohgramming a bare MCU using the USB tool?

Thanks a lot in advance for any ideas.

  • You can get the mating connector from DigiKey. I do not remember the part  number. It comes in a long strip any you cut it yourself.

You can also buy F2012 target boards from TI. 3 boards for $20 is well worth it!

  • Awesome! Thank you so much, I had no idea about the connector being on Digikey, I'll search for it.

About the target boards: this is my plan for now, I am just getting ready to order a few of them and use them in my project without having to mess with weird connectors. However, for the future I was thinking to try to use the F2012 directly, I found it for sale for $1.88 each while the target boards are almost double in price so the final price would be lower.

But overall, I totally agree with you: the target boards have the integrated LED and they are definitely worth a lot more than messing with the processor directly.

    Thanks again.

  • the manufacturer part numbers for the eZ430 headers are listed in the FAQ of the tool user guide.

for small prototypes, i usually order them from mouser.  the headers are hard to find in 4- or 6-pin lengths, but strips of 50-pin are much easier to get a hold of.  it's pretty simple to snap off the length that you need.

here are the parts you need:

    from mouser catalog:

  • Great, thanks a lot for the info, adrian, I was not able to find it at Digikey so this helps a lot!

Not to nitpick but I thought it was 3 F2012 target boards for $10 or $20 for the EZ430-F2013 dev kit.[:)]
