MSP430G2111 ICSP with Arduino

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430G2111

I have an Arduino and an MSP430G2111. I was wondering if it is possible to program the MSP430G2111 through the Arduino. I am on a strict budget so i opted to not buy the launchpad and see if ICSP was an option. Could it also work the other way? Please show me how to do this if it is possible. I am trying to find a cheap way to program the MSP430G2111 because I don't want to have to buy a launchpad if a microcontroller is going to be there for 30 seconds to transfer a program. And i also want some kind of removable programmer (like an Arduino) instead of an integrated processer (like the launchpad).

  • The launchPad costs $4.30 US inc INTERNATIONAL Shipping... Im from NZ ... I just bought one. Trust me, its not worth the hassle... Even if you use it for 30 seconds (which you wont, you will probably want to update code a few times) that is till only 14.33 cents a second... And not to mention there are MANY a things that you can do with it...

I cannot understand your question, YOU are on a strict budget so you buy an arduino that cost 10 or more time a Launchpad, you state processor need stay 30 second on launchpad  to program...

Are you sure of what you need to do? Launchpad can act also as remote programmer and debugger too, is more faster than an arduino and more cheap...

  • The LaunchPad isn't an integrated board with 'onboard processor'. it is a programmer for G2 series devices with attached socket and breakout connectors (and some basic peripherals fo initail experiments). You can put any G-series processor into the socket, program it, then out it into the PCB in which it shall work. Also, you can use three wires to connect the progammer part to an MSP on your own PCB.

However, if you insist on using existing ICSP with the MSPs, well, you may try. I doubt you'll get it working in time. the serial JTAG SBW protocol isn't supported by any 'generic' JTAG interface, so you simply cannot program many of the MSPs which do not have standard JTAG pins.
And even for those where the ICSP will connect, the only thing that will probably work is the JTAG bypass command. For anything else, you'll have to write your own JTAG software (nobody else bothered to do this so far) that does the connect, CPU setup and flashing process. It's like with the PC: having a device with USB doesn't mean you can use it. You'll still need the drivers. And in your case, no drivers for your device (the MSP) exist for the OS you're attaching it (your ICSP). All you'll get is a "I see it but I don't know what to do with it" message.
