EM430F5137RF900 unsoldered crystal

Hi,All,

Recently I got a pair of EM430F5137RF900 boards, I found out that there are two 32 KHz crystals in the kit. Though the footprint of the EM board has place for the 32 KHz crystal, they are not soldered on the board. On the other hand, the board seems working (flashing LED) once battery is connected. My question is, 

1) What's the 32 KHz crystal used for?

2) Do I need to solder the 32 KHz crystal on the EM board?

3) Why the board seems working even without the 32KHz crystal?
