pin combatibility

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430FR5969, MSP430FR5729, MSP430FR5720

Hi,

I started to work on a project using new MSP430FR5969 device.

However, I need to find a MSP430F5xxx series  device, which is pin compatible with MSP430F5969.

I case of unavalability of FRAM device (or NRND) I need an option to replace the chips with no hardware changes to the board

(the software has to be changed)

I did a manual coparison of pinouts, but couldn't find any matches.

Questions:

Is there a tool to show pin compatibility for MSP430 family?

Is there another device pin compatible with MSP430FR5969?

I have built a pin compatibility tool for MSP430 in excel.  It is currently populated with all the parts from the KiCad microcontroller library

You enter two specifc part numbers (in green), and it highlights any differences (in yellow).

I'll add the FR59xx parts.  Do you have a shortlist of the F5xx parts you would like to consider?  I you have just a handful, I would add them for you and post the tool in this thread.
  • Hi Jason,

Somehow my post has been lost, so it is again:

    1) go to http://www.ti.com/lsds/ti/microcontroller/16-bit_msp430/product_search.page

    2) select "FRAM Series" and "5 Series" from "SubFamily" column

    3) select "48VQFN" from "Pin/Package" column

    4) select "1" and "2" from "USCI_B" column and "2" from "USCI_A" column - need 3 serial interfaces (UART + SPI + I2C)

    That gives me 8 devices

Do I need to check them all pin by pin?

I need pin to pin replacement compatibility.

No. The 5341 and 5342 ar eidentical except for the size of flash and ram.

For the other 6, I guess (I don't have the datasheet at hand), the 521x and 522x parts are also pin compatible and only differ in flash/ram size. The difference might be in the last digit (type of ADC ro somehting like that). Or last digit is flash/ram size and the third digit denotes the difference in internal capabilities (and therefore pin functions).
But without Datasheet, I'm not sure.

As a rule of thumb, parts in the same datasheet with the same package are usually pin compatible (at least regarding VCC, GND, crystals, ports). However, some functions may be not available on all of them and therefore secondary pin functions may differ)

No, I just had a look at the power pins.  They don't match.  it seems there is no flash device that is pin compatible with the MSP430FR5969.

The next ttime I make an update, I'll add these parts to the KiCad library and then the pin comparison tool.

  • Jason,

Thanks for your time and effort taken.

It is a bad news for me, however.

Can you confirm, that there is no device pin compatible with MSP430FR5969 within the entire MSP430 family(not only the ..5 series)?

If yes, it is really odd and the question is why? Can you ask your colleagues from the wolverine design team about the motivation behind it.

I still have the great hope with the wolverine series, but now need a series consideration if I should use them for a current project.

What is the roadmap for the Wolverine family?

There is good compatibility within the collection of FRAM deviecs, but I don't see a smooth pin to pin migration to a flash based part.  I don't yet have the means to do a full comparison of all our ~800 unique devices like you're asking.  However, even though I cannot say with absolute certainty, I'm fairly confident there is no pin-to-pin compatible flash based MSP430 to migrate to from a FRAM based MSP430.

There is sometimes a tradeoff between compatability with other desirable factors: size, cost, peripherals, etc.  Even so, I believe that there is room for improvement by making considerate choices when a part is designed.  You will not see old parts change since we need to maintain their form fit and function, but you can expect an improvement in pin compatibility on upcoming parts.  Thanks for your feedback.

Good things are coming.  Reach out to your local Texas Instruments sales and distribution.  If you have a NDA in place with Texas Instruments, then they will be able to reveal our roadmap devices.

  • Hi Jason,

Do you know if there is an alternative pin compatible MSP430 (lower cost) solution to an MSP430FR5729 (VQFN-40)..... I understand that I can drop down to the  MSP430FR5720 but wondered if there is anything even cheaper in a traditional memory style (maybe the value line series)?

    Cheers,

    Mike

How closely does the MSP430G2444IRHA40 meet your needs?
