MSP430F5528 MSP430F5x MSP430F5xxx DST (Daylight Savings Time) Support in RTC_A Module.

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F5528

Hello,

I see no mention of DST (Daylight Savings Time) in the Datasheets for F5x devices (w/ RTC_A module) like MSP430F5528 or in the associated Family Users Guide (slau208).  Is this correct that the RTC_A module does not provide automatic support for DST updates?  If no automatic support is provided, I suggest that the Datasheets and Family Users Guides be updated to state this.

Thanks, Merril

    H. ;-)

How could it? DST is different in every country and sometimes changes from year to year (not to mention a lot of places don't use it to begin with).

This is something you do in software (if needed). Set an alarm for when DST begins (or ends) and update the hour register, then set the alarm for the next DST event.

I disagree. It should state what it can do, nothing more, nothing less.

Here I disagree, partly. If DST support were a commonly supported hardware feature on RTCs, then I'd expect to be mentioned that it isn't supported. However, it isn't a hardware feature at all, as you already said.
It's a good manner to tell if you don't fully support a standard feature set instead of just listing what you support and leave it to the customer to compare the two lists. However, if something is not standard (or not provided by anyone else too), not supporting it is nothing to be mentioned (or else the users guide wouldn't fit on my HD) :)

BTW: once I had an OmniGo (well, I still have it). An ancestor of PDAs, ahead of its time. One day I got a bogus DST warning. As a result I appeared an hour too early next day, because DST had been moved to a different date since the OmniGo was manufactured. And since the OS was in ROM (no flash at these times), and the device was discontinued, there was no update available for fixing this.
In Germany, the period of DST is individually set with a dedicated law each year (and Windows needs an update to handle it correctly).
