Any LC Sensor Available?

The TI documents  slaa578 and slaa222 and many others describe an LC Sensor. This is essential for my project.  Below, is a picture of one used in the TI Literature (the daughter board pictured):


However, I can't find an LC Sensor or even a like LC sensor (even if it's not on a circuit board) available for purchase. Could someone please let me know of any LC sensors that are available for purchase? I would appreciate it.

  • In documentation you cited, each LC sensor is built simply by shunting a capacitor and an inductor of appropriate values, don't you could do the same?

    Sure he can make manufacture sensor himself. Thing is that inductor itself works as sensor so ideally it shall have M-type core as shown in application note, figure 7. Dig into your scrapbox looking for two small transformers, disassemble them, rewind and use in open core configuration as shown in fig7.

  • First off, I wanted to say thank you for your replies!  As I become better at this, I hope to answer questions on this forum as well.

    By figure 7, the following is written in the slaa222:

    "The magnitude of the decaying oscillation depends on:

    • Distance and position of the damping material
    • Dimension and form of the damping material
    • Conductivity and permeability of the damping material"

    It has to be exact to be used for calculations.  So it's not something that can be made by hand, with any accuracy, without precision tools or in a manufacturing setting.  Thanks though :)

    Either way, the Scan IF that's used to read the LC sensors (inductive-capacitive L-C sensor), must be available in some way that I can purchase.  It doesn't make sense.  The Scan IF technology is documented by TI in other documents (slaa 288, 289, 321, 578 and others) and is used in all of the MCP430FW42 series MCPs.  Does anyone know of any LC sensor that I can purchase  that will work with these MCPs?  

  • The ScanIF is a peripheral embedded in MCP430FW42.

    The damping material is that on one half of the rotating dish.

    Schematic at pag. 13 of SLAA578 gives reference values for inductors and capacitors on the board (under the rotating dish).

    IMHO you could make a similar dish and tune software parameters based on try&error cycles.

  • Thanks for your reply. Yes, Scan IF technology is used to read these sensors.

    In order to have accuracy, the damping material and all parts of this have to have the exact characteristics mentioned in the SLAA documents. I think you would agree creating this with accuracy would be time consuming and not possible without proper equipment. Otherwise, in accurate readings could result.

    The Scan IF technology used to read these sensors is heavily documented by TI in more than 5 slaa document and Scan IF technology is used in many MCP430s.  

    In any case, it should be available for purchase. Does anyone know of any LC sensor, that I can purchase, that can be read using the Scan IF technology?
