MSP-FET430UIF programmer question

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F2012, MSP430F2011

I am trying to program the MSP430F2012 on new PCB using the MSP-FET430UIF device from TI.  When I plug in a previous design using the MSP430F2011 everything is fine.  When I connect the MSP-FET430UIF to the the new design the MSP-FET430UIF's green led power indicator flashes once and then goes out and stays out.  Also the red led is always out.  I suspect that perhaps an over current condition has arisen but I cannot find any documentation talking about this.  Has anyone experienced a similar issue?  Thanks in advance

  • Hi Al,

Would you be able to share some more information about your system so that I can help troubleshoot this issue?

    If you could provide:

    1. A schematic of your power / JTAG / reset circuit.
    2. A description of your power scheme.  Are you powering your PCB from an external supply or from the MSP-FET430UIF itself?

  • Walter:

Thanks fr the reply.  I have figured out my problem with the new PCB design and the MSP-FET430UIF programming issue.  First, when the power green led on the MSP-FET430UIF blinks and goes out it is definitely a current overload situation.  When I measured the impedance on the PCB header between the 3.3 v and gnd inputs that the programmer connects to I found the impedance to be 22 ohms.  3.3v/22 ohms = 150ma and the MSP-FET430UIF has a limit of 60ma as does the USB port.

Upon looking at my board I noticed I had misplaced and interchanged two silkscreen reference designators which cause my assembler to put parts in the wrong locations.  The parts were the 22ohm resistor and 100uf cap the 3.3v input interface uses.  So instead of the cap going to gnd the resistor did. and thus the overload.

Everything is working fine now.  Thanks again and hopefully my experience might help someone else.
