I want to power msp430g2553 which is interfaced with GSM modem, please help me to get an easy way to power the mcu from ac mains.

Use wall-wart AC/DC adapter with output voltage in range 4..12V DC and add 3.3V fixed output voltage LDO regulator.

Supposedly you can find typical LDO power supply circuit in it's datasheet.

If the GSM modem is self-powered, you might be able to use some unused output signals of the modem to draw the required MSP operating current. RTS/CTS and DTR/DSR are candidates. Their pullup or output current might be large enough to operate the MSP (using diodes)

But my GSM modem is not self powered...! How can i design a separate supply for the MSP430G2553 IC ? Is it possible by using LM317 ?

You can use any charger/adapter from broken mobile phone with output about 5V DC, and after this use something like TLV1117-33 (or any other LDO 3.3V reg).
