CC430 above 3.6V

Hey,

Had a question about the CC430 operation slightly above 3.6V. For our application we need a 3.6V rated battery because most coin cells have poor voltage response at low temperatures and over operational life. Granted, we could just use a low quiescent LDO with our 3.6V battery however, the cost of such LDO's would preferably be avoided especially in volume.

Most 3.6V rated batteries have a open circuit voltage of about ~3.67V. The recommended CC430 operational voltage is 3.6V max. However, the "absolute max" is 4.1V. What consequences can we expect to see as a result of being slightly over the 3.6V recommended operation?

Exceeding absolute max voltage means irreversible damage of the part. Exceeding recommended operating voltage means that operational parameters possibly will be out of specified in the datasheet, tolerances. This is more or less common rule of voltage specs and I am not TI representative :)

You could run the CC430 directly off the battery. But technically you are slightly above the 3.6V maximum operating voltage. You might want to consider a low quiescent LDO and run the MCU at a lower operating voltage. It could actually reduce your system operating current. Sleep and operating currents are reduced at lower operating voltage.
