MSP-430 preferable to MIPS

I am an electrical engineering undergrad, and I would like to understand what design requirements would make an MSP-430 preferable to using a MIPS?

msp430 is preferable when you need low power consumption but computing performance is not so important.

You can easily extract this kind of information from product marketing materials.

Low cost.

Small IC footprint.
