MSP430F530X Cvcore value

The specification for the MSP430F830x, slas677d, states that the value of Cvcore (at pin 13) should be 470 nf. Could a 1 uF be used instead?

  • Yes. 2.37uF also can be used :) Just note that capacitor having low ESR shall be used.

I guess there is an upper limit. If capacitance is too high, the internal regulator will have problem to ramp-up in time - or ramp down. So higher values make switching frequency ranges and LPMs less efficient.

In any case, the blocking capacitance at the MSP supply pins (not just the storage capacitors further away) should be at least ten times as much.

If capacitance is too larger, higher ESR might be better, as it limits the currents and doe snot stress the regulator that much.

However, 470nF is something one can still easily get in ceramic for a reasonable price and in a reasonable size. Neither tantalum nor electrolytic caps are recommended.

Bingo. So no reason to reinvent wheel.

  • Thanks for your replies.

    And also for the reminder:
