EXPCC430RF4 board not detected

Hello,

we are working on the EXPCC430RF4 board and having it detected on windows 7 and windows XP has proven a challenge.

Problem

When we launch the GUI for the network topology, the base board is not recognized, the GUI doesn't display data from it and the network is not represented.

Tools

Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7
CCSv5.5
user experience package at http://software-dl.ti.com/msp430/msp430_public_sw/mcu/msp430/MSP430EXPCC430RFUE/latest/index_FDS.html

What we tried

following the instructions on the users manual at http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slau460/slau460.pdf we did:

fresh install of windows 7, then installed CCSv5 with MSP430 support, and the user experience package (GUI + driver installer)
fresh install of windows XP then CCSv5 with MSP430 support and user experience package

In each case we tried to install CCS first then the user experience package, or only the package.

We also tried to run the USB driver installer alone without CCS installed.

We also tried to right-click on the .inf file next to the executable.

In the device manager, under "Other devices" we see an "Unknown device" which might not be related but which comes back if we deinstall it and run the USB driver installer again. This device has Hardware Ids: "ACPI\VPC2004" and "*VPC2004".

When we plug-in the main board, it is powered up, and the network seems to be working just fine. The satellite pairs with the main board.

Any suggestion on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

some more attempts:

when trying to debug with CCSv5, we get the following error: "Error initializing emulator: No USB FET was found"
we tried the flash tool at http://www.elprotronic.com/files/FET-Pro430-Lite-Setup.zip and it cant read the MSP FET430 firmware version
so we verified the DLLs exist at C:\ti\ccsv5\ccs_base\DebugServer\drivers\HIL.dll and MSP430.dll and MSP430v3.dll and replaced them with the latest version from http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php?title=MSP430_JTAG_Interface_USB_Driver#DLL_Developers_Package wich are HIL.dll@1.2.6 and MSP430.dll@3.3.1.4
and installed low level drivers, CDC and VCP from http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MSP430_JTAG_Interface_USB_Driver#Low-Level_USB_CDC_or_VCP_Drivers
when we restart windows, the "new hardware found" wizard starts for the unknown device even if the board is not plugged in (might be unrelated but i doubt it)

again, in the device manager there is no COM device and nothing shows up under USB either.

Hello Jacques,

The EXPCC430R4 board will not be listed under USB devices. It should be under Ports as "MSP430 Application UART (COM xx)".

I suspect that "Unknown Device" is actually the CC430 driver. Just to be sure, right click the device and select "Upgrade Driver". Select the option to Browse my computer for the software, then select the following directory:

C:\ti\msp430\MSP-EXPCC430_UE_1_00_00_01\USB_Driver

This is assuming you have already installed the EXPCC430Rx Software. If not, please download it using the link listed below.

Hi,

thank you for your response. I replaced my board and the same problem happens, which makes me think I am missing something.

I also think this unknown device is the board since it appears only when I plug the usb in, but none of those action will resolve the issue:

upgrading the driver from the device manager and selecting the USB_Driver folder - results in "Cannot install this hardware - the wizard cannot find the necessary software"
Double clicking on USB_Driver/USB_Driver.exe - results in nothing
Right clicking on 430cdc.inf and selecting install
Executing USB_Driver.exe in cmd - nothing is printed in the console

Any other idea?
