Target socket board connections

I have bought a target socket board TS430PZ5x100 and M430F5438A. I am newbee and I have never done microcontroller programming.

However, I can't find information about which parts to populate on the target socket. I looked in www.ti.com/lit/ug/slau278p/slau278p.pdf but it describes several components that are "do not populate". In fact, the Q1 crystal is indicated as DNP.

Will the system work without the components? Is there a document that describes how to make the hardware connections I will really appreciate your guidance.

Thanks Gaurav

  • Gaurav,

Those "DNP" comments are simply for the board house populating the PCBs.

The target board will work as it has shown up, and if you would like to add external crystals, you can do so on your own. They are left unpopulated so that the customer can choose what components to add.

  • The DNP components are not required for operation and not populated by default. However, the pads are provided so you can add them if you want.

e.g. the MSP runs without any crystal. But you may want to add a watch crystal (using internal load capacitors), or maybe a high-speed crystal (if supported) which requires external capacitors.
On the LaunchPad, default population is using two 0Ohm "resistors) to connect the pins with the breakout connector. IF you want to use the crystal, remove these resistor and populate the crystal.

I recommend reading the 'clock system' chapter of the users guide, which tells you what the MSP requires or not regarding system clocks ('strategy guide'). The device datasheet gives you the additional electric specifications then ('electrical guide').
