Using Putty to create a virtual com

Hello,

I am trying to use putty to create a virtual com for UART communication between my computer and my chip. I am using the EZ430-RF2500 Development kit to do this project. I have downloaded putty and it is asking me to log in. I am assuming I put in my IP address and search for a com, but I cannot seem to find it. Any hints? Lastly, the final goal of this project is to retrieve information gathered by my chips and store them on my PC via text file. Is this possible?

PUTTY does use an existing com port (real or virtual), it does not create a virtual com.

I guess my revised question would be how do I access/read the virtual com created by the msp430?

Most LaunchPad and ez430 PC interface includes a virtual com port. You can use any terminal emulator to access that virtual com port. PUTTY can do that too, but it is unidirectional while other terminal emulators are usually bi-directional. HeperTerminal, Real-therminal, etc.

You can find the virtual com port number by examining the Windows Hardware Device Manager. It is listed in the "Ports (COM and LPT)" category. In some cases, the baudrate is limited to 9600 and lower.

Sure PUTTY can do bi-directional serial conversation, as well as any other program you mentioned.

However, only newer versions of PUTTY support a serial port (strange, considering the name) while older ones only supported SSH and telnet.
