Hello All,
I have a few basic queries with regard to the MSP430F5438 Experimenter Board :
1. I understand MSP430F5438 is not recommended for new designs. Rather, we are advised to use MSP430F5438A. Is this upgrade made in the Experimenter Board as well , or do we need to manually replace the IC ?
2. Can I use the USB emulator that accompanies the ez430-RF2500 kit to flash/debug the MSP430F5438 Experimenter Board? Or do I need to buy the USB-FET module instead?
Thanks !
Jim,
1. Basically you can use the same kit with the MSP430F5438 and MSP430F5438A. I am not sure which samples are delivered with the kit, but however if you get MSP430F5438 non A with the kit, you can just order free samples of MSP430F5438A.
2. no, unfortunately you can't. Please refer here: http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MSP430_FAQ#Which_MSP430_target_device_does_my_FET_.28Flash_Emulation_Tool.29_support.3F
Hi Leo,
1. Noted.
2. Well, the image actually says RF 2500 supports both, 5438 and 5438A ! Do you mind taking another look to confirm?
Thanks !

Don't confuise the RF2500 (2x family based with sub-1GHz RF) with the RF-2560 (5x family based with BT-RF).
Oh yes! You are right!
I somehow got confused between RF2500 and RF2560. So I would just go for the USB-FET to program MSP430F5438.
Thanks everyone!
