MSP430, port pins ability to drive short cable runs

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MAX3222

Hi,

I have an MSP430 design where the MCU resides on one board and I have some IR LEDs on a number of 'satellite' boards.   The IR LEDs are switched on/off using n-channel MOSFET controlled by the MSP430 port pins. The satellite boards can be up to 2 metres away from the main board over cable   (maybe Cat5 TP?).

My questions are;

- can I drive the cable directly from the port pins?

- signal speeds are slow, 38kHz carrier.  Do I need to concern myself with terminating the signals (or just add series R at drive end)?

- if I would be better using a driver, is a 74HC125 type device the most appropriate?

- is noise immunity going to be a problem?  Do I need LVDS?  The environment is not particularly hostile.

Any advice gratefully received.

Tony

  • Hi again,

    After further thinking about the above, I'm going to use RS232 drivers/receivers (MAX3222 or similar) to transfer the signals.

    It seems like the most cost effective solution, and my data speeds are slow....

    Anyone suggest an alternative?

    Tony
