MSP-FET430UIF v1.4a not responding

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-TS430DA38

Hi Guys,

I recently bought MSP-TS430DA38 with MSP-FET430UIF (v1.4a), but I just can't get it working.

My setup:

* I'm running Windows 7 64-bit inside Parallels VM on mac osx

* I installed the drivers package from: http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MSP430_JTAG_Interface_USB_Driver

* I installed the FET-PRO430 v3.2

Symptoms:

When I plug in the MSP-FET430UIF into the usb port the red led (mode) is flashing three times and then the green led (power) turns on and stays that way. Which I assume means that the device is working properly.

It installs in my device manager as "MSP-FET430UIF -VCP(COM7)" and claims it's working properly.

Then I run the FET-PRO430 and try to check the firmware by going to tools -> "Read MSP-430FETUIF Firmware version". This results with error: "MSP430.dll initialization error".

I'm really puzzled - I tried reinstalling the drivers. Installing CCSv6 and all other stuff that I could find around this problem on the forum. I start to loose hope - could it be that the MSP-FET430UIF is simply broken? How I can verify that?

Thanks for help !

Regards,

Michal

I am running Win XP 32 on VBOX VM under Linux, so what VM are you using to emulate? Is USB device mapped to VM still when it change name? SO check on USB mapping if still is connected when you do firmware check or update, I got device burned from Windows native but your appear to be reactive.

Try download Elprotronic standalone programmer and see if it can drive FET430UIF too.

CCSV6 is not running native on your platform?

  • Hi Roberto,

Thanks for the hint - I find your answer helpful. This guided me to check if vm is not messing the setup. I found this resource:

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Category:Mac_OS_X_Support_-_MSP430

And it says that it works fine with Parallels v7 (I'm using v8), but it also says that the firmware upgrade needs be done on the native PC. what it doesn't say is that with v2 msp-fet430uif firmware it will not work at all. I would at least expect that with v2 firmware and v2 driver it would respond to the elprotonic "read firmware". But my expectation were to high...

    Solution:

Basically I got my hands on a native PC. Installed there the Elprotonic PRO-FET430. On native PC it clearly confirmed that the firmware is in v2. I upgraded it to V3 successfully and now it works fine with my MAC + Parallels 8.

On linux from VM setting all "reincarnation" of TI device as transparent I can do every operation as it was native. I prefer use an XP SP2 where thing are still working. Next step is to migrate to a Linux only IDE also for MSP as I am doing with TIVA.

I am still using IAR free code limited version and a Quadravox compiler, the worst issue I notice is lack of support from (expensive) Elprotronics programmer , the better I own and ISO version from Olimex.
