EnergyTrace with IAR EW

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ENERGYTRACE, MSP-FET, MSP-EXP430FR5969

Hi,

Does IAR EW code size limited version for MSP430 (version 6.10.2) support EnergyTrace?

I am trying to follow http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slau138af/slau138af.pdf , but all the options under "Emulator" menu are greyed out. Do I need any extra driver for C-Spy or are they disabled for that version?

  • Hi Jan,

To use EnergyTrace you will need either the MSP-FET or the latest MSP-EXP430FR5969 launchpad rev2.0 board - do you have either of these tools? I know that in CCS it will detect if your tool supports EnergyTrace and I suspect that IAR is similar in this respect. Please also note that EnergyTrace++ will only be possible right now with MSP430FR58xx/59xx Rev. F devices, though you can use regular EnergyTrace with any MSP430 as long as you have the right tool.

  • Hi Katie,

I do have the latest MSP-EXP430FR5969 Launchpad rev.2.0 acquired only a few days ago. And I'm trying the latest software examples provided by TI. It works with CCSv6, but not with IAR, so something must be missing - maybe some extra setup. The reason I'm trying IAR is that I need EnergyTrace to run in a continuous mode, not only taking a short snapshot (as with CCS) and I'm trying to check if IAR does that.

  • Hi Jan,

I just tried using EnergyTrace with IAR Kickstart 6.10.2 and was able to get it working following the steps in www.ti.com/lit/pdf/slau138

Can you show us what was greyed out for you with a screenshot, and maybe screenshots of your other debugger settings?

A few things to check -

    1. right click on the project and go to Options.... Under Debugger make sure that it is selected to be FET Debugger (not simulator).
    2. Then under FET Debugger menu, make sure to check the box for Enable ULP/LPMx.5 debug.

  • Hi Katie,

Thanks for your help. At some stage it decided to do the emulator firmware update and now it works.
It doesn't give me a graph as I would like to have, so I need to figure out how to use what I have
