MSP-EXP430fr5969 Fatal error: Could not find device

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-EXP430FR5969

Every time I try to connect to the MSP-EXP430fr5969 dev board with IAR EMbedded Workbench I get Fatal error: Could not find device (or device not supported) Session aborted!

I can use the Elprotronics FET and can do a BLANK CHECK, READ the chip, WRITE FLASH etc, and the Elprotronics says JTAG communications initialization OK, but I cannot seem to get the IAR to talk with the board.

I know there is some kind of communication problem going on, but out of ideas.  Am I missing a driver from IAR?  I'm running IAR 5.60.2  Thanks for any response.

  • Hi Jim,

Are you tying to program the board using the on board eZ-FET or are you using another FET tool?

Do you have the correct FET tool selected under the IAR projects options?

If you are using the on board eZ-FET  one option is to uninstall the driver from the device manager and allow the driver to be reinstalled.

  • I see there is a question regarding the FET tool you are using.  If the answer to that question is yes then you have a similar problem to what I have experienced.  In my case the FET tool had been updated while using CCS.  This made it unusable with IAR (my version 5.10 in Windows 7).  My FET tool used to work fine with both CCS and IAR in WinXP.  When I upgraded to Window 7 the problem appeared.  I contacted IAR and aside from informing me of the obvious, my version was out of date, they informed that the drivers in Windows 7 were not compatible with the firmware updated in the FET tool.  IAR informed that the only way to fix the problem was to upgrade to 6.x.  Other than driver issues I have no need to update.  CCS works fine.

    • The SLAU535A (Revised June 2014) states in TABLE 6 that IAR  Embedded Workbench will work with this LaunchPad device with v5.60 but I found it doesn't.  I upgraded to v6.10.5 and I can now get the JTAG to work with the gray colored MSP-FET430UIF and the new black colored TI FET.  I then tried the Elprotronics FET and it does not work so I'm assuming there may be a new DLL??? I'll have to investigate that one further.  But I just wanted to update this thread in case someone else gets the comm error I initially described.

The TI App Note needs updating.  BTW, when I opened the FR5969 LaunchPad box there's a yellow insert that states to "Please update your IDE for full compatibility." Not sure what full compatibility means but... it seems to have fixed my JTAG comm issue.

Best regards and thanks to those that responded.

    -Jim
