MSP430F149 Rev AE: unable to program

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-GANG

Hi,

We are using MSP430F149IPM.  Rev L and Rev AA seems to work fine but not Rev AE.  Unable to program the chip.  What are the changes I need to make so that this chip with Rev AE can be programmed?

Thanks

Madhu

  • Hi Madhu,

How are you trying to program the device - we would need to know this to figure out your problem.

    • What hardware tools - like MSP-FET430UIF, MSP-GANG, etc?
    • What software tools  - like CCS, IAR, Elprotronic, 430flasher, etc? and what version/release?
    • What protocol - SBW, JTAG, BSL?

Are you sure that all software tools you are using are updated to the latest version?

    Regards,

    Katie

  • We don’t use the BSL file.  We program the parts In-System, over JTAG, using the prgs430.dll (version 1.2.2.3) in conjunction with the MSP-PRG430 programmer.

What should the next step be?

  • Hi Madhu,

Thanks for the additional information - I had not realized that you were using the MSP-PRGS430 programmer.

I took a look at the software for programming using this tool, and I see this download here has the DLL examples included with it: http://www.ti.com/lit/zip/slac029 I'm guessing this is what your project is based off of.

However, please see on the MSP-PRGS430 tool page http://www.ti.com/tool/msp-prgs430 that there is this note: "Note: The PRGS PC-side software will not be updated for device updates. Instead, the stand-alone .cfg file will be updated. It should be downloaded and replace the one installed in \ADT430\PRGS\"

I see that in the download http://www.ti.com/lit/zip/slac029 you can open the device.cfg file and see that in the notes at the top of the file, the latest revision added for F14x is Revision AA. This would explain why the earlier Revs worked for you, but your newer Rev. AE part was not working.

Now, there is an updated version of the device.cfg file available on the same tool page, and here is the link: http://www.ti.com/lit/zip/slac529 This file if you open it and look in the comments at the top of the file, you will see that it has an additional update that the other file didn't have, and it adds support for Rev. AE.

So I think you should simply download this newer device.cfg file and place it in the C:\ADT430\PRGS folder instead of the earlier file, and see if your programming now works.

    I hope this helps,

    Katie

P.S. Please note that this tool is no longer being updated and is not recommended for new designs - if your customer does any new design is recommended to migrate to the MSP-GANG programmer. I understand that their current situation is on an existing design though - just a note for the future.

  • Thank you so much Katie for the quick responses.  Really helpful.

    Thanks

    Madhu
