Comparison between LCD driver integrated MSP430 series and LCD driver IC

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MM145453

I've read datasheet of MSP430FR413x (LCD driver integrated MSP430 series) and MM145453 (LCD driver IC).

And I realized that MSP430FR413x consumes less current and has cheaper price than MM145453. And in case of using MM145453, I also have to add one MCU which costs me more.

Upon the above information, I'm not clear in which case I should use MM145453 instead of MSP430FR413x ?

Hope you light me up. Thank you.

  • Hi Chanh!

The MM145453 is from May 2000. The MSP430 with built in LCD-controller are quite younger. Of course there is no need to use the MM145453 and a MSP430 with controller - it makes no sense. But there were other times back then and controllers did not have this functionality built in. You could emulate it with your portpins, but this generates code size, too, which isn't a problem nowadays due to the rising amount of memory-sizes. A chip that handles the LCD control for you was nice - just put the data to it, done.

Why is it still available? Because there might be many electronics out there using this chip and have never been re-engineered, but are still sold and produced.

But you are right, makes no sense to use both of them.
