IR signal read from the remote using msp430fr4133 launchpad

I am trying to read a IR signal from a remote (0-9) and store it in a variable.   I have went over the IR_Learning_Mode software that is with the IR booster pack. most of the day today.  I can not understand how it is working.  I do understand the concept just not how the software is working.  Where can I find just a example of receive IR and store?

    The ‘Learning’ example just stores the time length of a received signal and the time length till the next signal. When you push the corresponding Key it will transmit pulses according the stored time lengths. So there is not a Key or Button value, but it can store and (re)transmit any IR protocol.

    The IR_Receiver example decodes the received signal and stores it as number. But your Remote transmitter must use the same protocol as the example uses, the ASK Pulse Position encoding.
