CC430 Mesh + Energy Metering

Hello,

i'm searching for a simple wireless mesh network based on sub-ghz (868MHz) technology for simple 3 phase energy monitoring.

i've found a solution from 2011 wich demonstrates CC430 with Singe phase Energy Monitoring directly with a CC430 MCU.

SLAA487

My questions are:

1. If the MCU is connected to 230V AC mains with only a few 2 MOhm resistors, is it allowed to provide an external SMA connector for antenna conection?

This connector would have no isolation to mains, because it is also connected to the mcu and the metering circuit.

2. if it needs galvanic isolation between SMA Antenna connector and metering circuit, is it possible to use a normal MSP430 MCU with

ADuM (ISOpower SPI isolator with on chip DC/DC converter from Analog Devices) and extra RF Chip?

MSP430 <-> ADuM <-> RFChip CCxx <-> SMA Antenna connector

3.  Wich MCU can be used for 3 Phase Energy Metering (6x 12Bit ADC) + RF mesh networking for up to 1k nodes.

All nodes will be accessed every 10 minutes.

  • Hi,

    In respond to your questions

    1. You must provide isolation if your have exposed conductor

    2. I do not suggest your proposal as CC430 only has 12 bit ADC it can limit the accuracy level you meter provides, plus you need some external analog circuit to interface the voltage sensor and shunt. I would not suggest you to use Atmel for sure. I would siggest MSP430 (3 phase meter) UART -> OPTO -> CC430 -> SMA

    3. Please go to the page below where you can find a lot of 3 phase reference design and applicable MCUs

  • Hi Simon,

Did this answer your questions? Can we close the thread/mark it answered?
