MSP FET430 not detecting target after shorting in my target board

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F6779

Dear All,

I have MSP430F6779 based control(target) board. Due to some short-circuit my IC was burned out and during that time my FET430 was connected with it.

Now, red and Green LED glowing proper, also open and checked FET430 It looks ok, but It is not able to connect with target (another MSP430 based board).

I checked that PIN no.2 gives 3.3V but PIN no. 4 (Vout) gives 0V. Anyone has idea to make it working by replacing any part?

waiting for your reply.

  • Hi,

What error message comes up when you try to use the FET to connect to the other functioning MSP430 board? We can try to determine if your FET is still functioning after the short.

    Sincerely,
    Sean
  • Hi

Thanks for your reply and Appreciate TI FET design in point of protection.

Error is : "Cannot found Target device"

Also I have open it and come to know that (with reference of circuit provided by TI) some of resistors in series with JTAG 14 pin connector was open, and Internal Zener of static protection IC has  been shorted, Vcc and GND looks fine of rest of part.

I am planning to replace it and check my Luck...:)

    Let me know your inputs.

  • It sounds like you have found the blown components, and hopefully after replacing them, the FET will work. I would also use section 2 of the below hardware user's guide for any debugging issues.

Let me know if there's any updates!

  • Hi

    Thanks for your reply.

I have changed the component (except ESD IC-not available with me),
Now FET can able to powerup target board (which was not after shorting)....

But still not able to working it properly.

after this changes, In first connection It gives error " Error Initializing Emulator, No USB FET was found"
     only once.

After that I gives Error::: " Error connecting to target, /unknown device" in next number of tries.

Also I like to share that power LED of my Target board glow after few second and with little bit low luminance as compare to the healthy condition.

What should I do next, Also I plan to buy new one, TI shows they will replace FET430 with new version and stop it. Is it compatible with my MSP430 controller.

Also parallel evaluate docs share by you.

    waiting for your reply.

    Regards

  • Hi,

It does sound like there's a hardware problem even after replacing the components in the FET, I will ask around for any additional troubleshooting tips. But I think a replacement is the last viable option.

    Sincerely,
    Sean
