Hello!

I am trying to connect a MSP430F2011, placed on a breadboard through spy by wire to the ez430 USB interface. The ez430 is from the eZ430 - RF2500 kit and the uC is just standalone, no board attached. Software wise I am using the IAR Embedded Workbench IDE.

I have created a new workspace and project and loaded a basic example for the F2011, that I got from the site. I have also set up the debugger to "FET Debugger" in project options and selected the MSP430F2011 as the device. When I click debug I get the error:

Failed to load debugee: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\IAR test\Debug\Exe\test.d43

and popup:

Fatal error: Failed to initialize device.

Session aborted!

I have grabbed the pins on the eZ430, which the data sheet states as Spy By Wire pins with mini crocodile clamps and connected them with the uC on the breadborad. The connections are following:

(top to bottom on the eZ430 if the USB is on the left)

eZ430 P2 --> F2011 P1 // VCC

eZ430 P3 --> F2011 P11 // TEST/SBWTCK

eZ430 P4 --> F2011 P10 // #RST/SBWTDIO

eZ430 P5 --> F2011 P14 // VSS

Any help is much appreciated.

Hi Jurij,

do you have the 47k Ohm pull-up on he RESET signal in place? Pls refer to page page 28 of the MSP430 Hardware Tools users guide (http://focus.ti.com/lit/ug/slau278e/slau278e.pdf).

Does your tool work o.k. with the eZ430-RF2500T board (the one that comes with the eZ430U part of the tool)? The MSP430 wiki (http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MSP430) has some good troubleshooting guides if the tool doesn't work fine (http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Category:EZ430_Development_Tools).

Hi!

Thank you for your reply. I have not seen the Hardware Tools guide yet. Hence, I have no resistor on RST. I will try it as soon as I get my hands on one, I have only lower values at home.

If you can help me further, the scheme on page 28 also shows certain capacitors in the circuit. Are they also necessary? I believe C1 just represents max "parasitic" capacitance? Not sure about C2 and C3 tough.

And one more thing. Are there any examples on very simple circuitry to power these devices once disconnected from the debugger? This is a learning project for me, I have no previous experience dealing with standalone uCs, just demo boards.

Hi Jurij,

C1 is not mandatory; C2 and C3 were for filtering the MCU power supply and you should populate them in every good design.

Regarding a small, simple, reliable and cheap power supply I would recommend using a linear regulator like i.e. LM317 (http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/lm317.html). There are many other options hence I recommend this one because of its available packages.
