I can't program my LaunchPad MSP432; the IDE can't connect to target. What's wrong?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3100BOOST, MSP432WARE

I was able to debug and program the MSP432 LaunchPad before and everything worked fine.

After some updates, I wasn't able to do so again. When I ran the Test Connection, I got the

following message:

The JTAG DR Integrity scan-test has succeeded. [End: Texas Instruments XDS110 USB Debug Probe]

It seems to me that the XDS110 USB Debug Probe is working fine. But when I tried to debug the

MSP-EXP432P401R Out Of Box Demo, I got the error message:

CORTEX_M4_0: Error connecting to the target: (Error -1063 @ 0x0) Device ID is not recognized or is not supported by driver. Confirm device and debug probe configuration is correct, or update device driver. (Emulation package 6.0.83.1)

My CCS is  Version: 6.1.1.201508201800.        Compiler Version: TI v5.2.6

How do I fix this problem?

Thanks,

Sam

  • Sam,

Have you seen the following E2E post? this may help you get back on track with your project.

  • Hi JH,
After I reset the Debug Probe to default factory settings, I was able to download and debug the board again. It seems working.
But when I tried to work on the "CC3100BOOST_MQTT-TwitterLED_MSP432P401R" example, I ran into the same problem again. I repeated the resetting steps and it always gave me this error message:

CORTEX_M4_0: GEL Output: Memory Map Initialization Complete
CORTEX_M4_0: GEL Output: Halting Watchdog Timer
CORTEX_M4_0: Flash Programmer: Erasing main memory
CORTEX_M4_0: Flash Programmer: Writing 32752 bytes to flash memory 0x00000000
CORTEX_M4_0: Flash Programmer: Writing 20088 bytes to flash memory 0x00007ff0
CORTEX_M4_0: Failed CPU Reset: (Error -2063 @ 0x0) Unable to reset device. Power-cycle the board. If error persists, confirm configuration and/or try more reliable JTAG settings (e.g. lower TCLK). (Emulation package 6.0.83.1)

    What is the problem now?
How can I get "CC3100BOOST_MQTT-TwitterLED_MSP432P401R" example working?

    Thanks,
    Sam
  • Hi JH,

I can't see the post: e2e.ti.com/.../467612. The web page says:
    Access Denied
You do not have permission to view/download this item.

My Launchpad board and the Debug Probe worked fine before.
Why do I have so much problem with it now?

    Thanks,
    Sam
  • Sam,

Sorry about that. It seems that was the wrong link anyway. Basically, can you perform the factory reset steps in www.ti.com/.../slau575 (section 7)?

I am unsure of the complete reason why this has to be done, but it seems there is a miscommunication between different settings for the emulator depending on the version of CCS you have and version projects were initially made under. I believe there was a change on where some settings where pulled from.

Let me know if these steps do not solve your issue.

  • Hi JH,
For most other examples in MSP432Ware, it worked if I performed the factory reset steps in www.ti.com/.../slau575 (section 7). It seems to me that I have to repeat that process for every project I created now. But why do I have to do that now for each one of those projects? I had no problem with them before some recent updates.

But performing the factory reset steps in www.ti.com/.../slau575 (section 7) still didn't fix the problem for project "CC3100BOOST_MQTT-TwitterLED_MSP432P401R". I still have problem loading the code into the chip.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Sam
  • Sam,

In order to investigate this issue further, can you provide your project? If you are not comfortable posting it directly to the forum here, please send me a private message.

  • Hi Sam,

Please find attached a working "CC3100BOOST_MQTT-TwitterLED_MSP432P401R" project. Could you please try this project with HW and let us know if you encounter the same problem.

      Thanks,

  • Hi Jace,

Thanks for sending me the *_RGB.zip file. After performing the factory reset steps in www.ti.com/.../slau575 (section 7), I was able to load the code into the chip without problems. I am going to pair it up with CC3100BOOST board to test the application.

It would be nice that I don't have to perform the factory reset steps in www.ti.com/.../slau575 (section 7) for every new project I create from now on. Is there a way to fix that?

    Thanks,
    Sam
