Hi,

I want to allow in field programming of a MSP430i2040 using a common micro usb with the lowest possible hardware cost.

The official documentation mentions only JTAG or spy-by-wire but googling it seems to be possible to use an uart and a tool like BSL scripter.

I have a couple of questions:

Is MSP430i2040 compatible with uart programming?
If not the only option I see is to use an FTDI chip configured for JTAG. What will I need to do software wise to support that?

Unfortunately, MSP430i2040 don't have BSL, and it is not possible to flash it by default with USB / UART bridge chip.

There are two possible solutions with low hardware cost

1) Making dedicated boot loader or application with possibility to update itself. By Using USB / UART bridge. There are some TI examples, and I made this for 2xx devices without BSL. Something like this...

2) More complex is shrinking down open source FET Lite, to basic flash update commands, with code size to fit in MSP430F5510. By using standard TI USB / SBW interface.
