Recommendation of a logic analyzer

Hello,

I would like to acquire a portable logic analyzer with at least 8 channels and preferably up to 100 MHz, for debugging my TI microcontrollers. Someone who has experience with this instrument could recommend me some?

My 2 cents: as most low power microcontrollers do not have external bus, not that much channels of logic analysis needed. Also logic analyzer does not show signal waveform often being actual problem. Having said that - I vote for scope with serial protocol decode option here.

This is one of the things I love about the Saleae. You can display BOTH logic and analog values

Right - it is for looking at analog values. To look at digital signal waveforms, you need much higher than 5MHz bandwidth - so you need scope anyway. On the other hand having my 4-channel scope with serial decode, I do not need logic analyzer for msp430 and alike, projects

I'm certainly not arguing against having a scope and I'm sure there are many scopes with advanced logic capabilities. That said, I like using a logic analyzer for logic analysis. I'll often have more than 4 channels tied up watching various pins and buses simultaneously. The ability to decode a wide variety of protocols is very nice. The option of writing my own decoders for in-house protocols is very nice.

That said, if I could only afford one instrument (beyond a basic DMM) it would certainly be an o-scope.
