RTC_B backup supply use case

Hi all,

I have recently gone through the application note SLAA665B RTC_B backup supply functionality. I have quite function for the purpose of this backup supply, since we have been usin a coin cell to retain the time in the RTC even power up cycle also. So what exactly this backup supply will do, is there any real time use case scenario to use this backup supply?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Prakash,

This Appnote describes certain MSP430 devices which contain the RTC_B Real-Time clock module with a Battery Backup System, which allows the RTC_B to keep running with the external crystal and keep time even when the main supply is lost. The application code will also be able to distinguish between a supply switching event or a full power loss. This function is applicable for the specific MSP430 devices mentioned in the Appnote, and if you have need for retaining an accurate RTC through battery changes in your end user application, then it would certainly be helpful.

    Sincerely,
    Sean
