MSP430FR5739 Experimenters board BSL programming problem

Hi,

We are unable to program a particular MSP430FR5739 Experimenters Board using BSL_Scripter.exe, although the same sequence correctly programs our older experimenters boards. So, we know that our methods are alright. We are using an MSP430F2553 Launchpad as the BSL programmer.

Also, when we power on the board, the curtain like sequence on the LEDs lights up, indicating that the factory "user experience" demo was burnt on it.

The error that we receive on the Command Prompt is:

You are using the wrong password file. The one you used was for a blank chip. The chip you have is already programmed. Try BSL script again, but tell it to mass erase the chip first before you send that same password file.

Thanks for the response. But, I am already doing MASS ERASE before RX PASSWORD. Even Mass Erase fails!

My mistake. You did Mass Erase. So I do not know what went wrong.

Hi Anup,

So the same sequence has worked on other MSP-EXP430FR5739 devices but fails on this one in particular? That definitely indicates a hardware issue. Is the MSP-EXP430FR5739 in question a different revision than the other boards, or has it been modified in any way? Make sure that all of the jumpers are properly installed as before.

Hi Ryan,

The same sequence works on 2 other boards with identical revision numbers (Rev 1.1). We changed the jumpers to fresh ones just to be sure, and it hasn't helped. Since the MCU is in a QFN package, it's difficult for us to trace pin connectivity, etc too. There is absolutely no kind of modification from our end. In fact, the starting LED sequence shows that no program has ever been burnt on it at our office.

Not sure how to recover this.

Hello Anup,

Can you try programming demo code to the FR5739 using CCS/IAR/Energia and the on-board eZ430 emulator, just to prove that the MCU is active and can be communicated with?

Hi Ryan,

That's where we started! Normal CCS didn't work. Now BSL also hasn't. We have tried burning code through an MSP-FET and powering through it and even using external power. It didn't work. Using another launchpad didn't work either. The debug interface on this board does program other boards just fine.

Thanks for that additional information, it sounds like the MSP430FR5739 is completely unresponsive. Could the board have become introduced to ESD voltages at any point? Was external power ever applied greater than the maximum ratings?

Hi Ryan,

Not really. We just opened the box around last week and saw issues with CCS itself. It was only connected over USB to the PC for programming. Our office is reasonably protected for ESDs but this particular launchpad wasn't used for anything before!

Anup,

Although extremely rare I suppose it is possible that you received a defective unit, since you have never been able to program or communicate with the device out of box.
