Interfacing MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad Development Kit with MSP430AFE253

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430AFE253, MSP-TS430PW24, MSP430I2030, MSP-TS430RHB32A

I have already asked the same query as mentioned below on live tech support, however, I would like to confirm if someone has previously tried using this before:

Can the  MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad Development Kit be used with MSP430AFE253 micro-controller.

Thank You.

  • Hi Bina,

You cannot use a MSP430AFE253 with the MSP-EXP430G2 as this platform only supports MSP430G2xx2, MSP430G2xx3, and MSP430F20xx devices. You will need a MSP-TS430PW24 Target Development Board

    Regards,
    Ryan
  • I had a MSP430AFE253 on a custom PCB so I just checked for you. No - the G2 can't program it, but the FET on newer LaunchPads like the F5529 can.

  • If you use a newer device MSP430 LaunchPad with eZ-FET emulator, you should be able to program it.
  • Thank you. Now I am using MSP430I2030 chip and it is mentioned that this chip can be used with the launchpad.http://www.ti.com/product/MSP430I2030/toolssoftware

However, it is unavailable in DIP package, hence, I have soldered the chip on an adaptor,  but the chip is of 28 pins and the launchpad has slot for 20 pins, so, I am thinking of making the connections using bread board and jumpers, however, according to the datasheet of MSP430I2030, the ADC input, if not required should be connected to analog ground, what exactly should be done to make sure that it is connected to analog ground, connecting a jumper to ground on bread board should suffice?

  • Bina,

This is a mistake in the MSP430I2030's tools software page that I am currently working to have corrected, rest assured that the MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad is incompatible with all MSP devices outside of the MSP430G2xx2, MSP430G2xx3, and MSP430F20xx families. Please consider purchasing a MSP-TS430RHB32A instead.

    Regards,
    Ryan
  • I purchased the board on the basis of that information, is there any return policy if the information on the website is incorrect? Also, could you suggest any msp430 chip which works with the stated launchpad and has a sigma delta converter on-board. Thank You!
  • Although the link is incorrectly placed on that particular web page there are no other sources or materials provided by TI that imply that the MSP430I2030 is compatible with the MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad. This is made even further clear by the fact that the MSP430I2030 does not have a 14/20-pin DIP package. You can contact the TI sales team for further information regarding returns.

There are no MSP430 SD devices The MSP430F20x3 devices are compatible with the MSP-EXP430G2 and have a SD A/D converter or any other available MSP LaunchPad.

    Regards,
    Ryan

  • Is this also present on the webpage by mistake

It is clearly stated everywhere that these two highlighted mucs are supported on launchpad and have on board sigma delta converter.

Either update your website or at least do not provide incorrect information.

  • The web page is correct and my previously supplied information was wrong, the MSP430F20x3 devices have a SD A/D converters and are compatible with the MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad.

    Regards,
    Ryan
