PCB-Based Touch Sensing with MSP430 help, How to increase the touch sensitivity ?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430FR2633

Hi All

I am thinking about using the MSP430 to create a touch sensor for my application. Using the PCB a simple touch pad will be created.

I would like to know is it possible make the touch sensor very sensitive so that the a hand or finger could simply hover over the pad to create a switch detection function.

How can this be achieved? Can it be done with a certain PCB layout?

Thank You

Regards

DJ

  • HI DJ,

What you are asking for is what we call "proximity sensing".  Please take a look at our new CapTIvate devices, such as the MSP430FR2633.  We also have a reference design that you can use as an example, which does include a proximity sensor.

Also, we have a CapTIvate Technology Guide, which has a whole section dedicated to a design guide, including proximity sensors.  I recommend taking a look through the entire Technology Guide, as there is a TON of useful information that will help you with your design.

    Mike
