MSP430F5172: Program Pass on MSP-FET but failed on MSP-FET430UIF

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-FET

Dear Champs,

For MSP430 programming, we used MSP-FET430UIF (white) and MSP-FET (black) to program MSP430F5172IRSBR.

MSP-FET always program successfully on each board but MSP-FET430UIF sometimes failed on some board (those board I called NG board as below.).

Those NG board failed when using MSP-FET430UIF but it still can be programmed on MSP-FET.

The programming GUI, we have tested CCS and FETPro430-Lite. And I also have tried to test MSP Debug Stack but it still do not solved this.

Customer is very confused on this result.

Do you have any idea for this testing result?

Thanks a lot.

Attached FETPro430-Lite detail and CCS Version: 6.1.3.00033

Janet

  • Janet,

To confirm, you can sometimes program a device with the MSP-FET430UIF, but not always, correct? Also, is the customer using 4-wire JTAG, or 2-wire SBW to connect to the device?

What are the connections between the FET430UIF and the target device? Is it just the standard ribbon cable that came with the tool to a 14pin header on the PCB, next to the part, or is there anything else in between? Also, how long are the JTAG traces on the board?

What is the capacitor value on the reset line? If it is not already 1nF or 1.1nF, can you try changing it to 1nF? If it is already at 1nF, can you try lowering to 470pF?

I suspect that if the MSP-FET works but the MSP-FET430UIF does not, the problem is related to signal quality on the JTAG lines, most likely capacitance on the reset line. Having traces/wires between the device and the FET tool that are too long can cause this, or having too large of a capacitor on reset can also cause this (we recommend 1nF on devices that are SBW capable, such as the F5172).

  • Dear Mike,

Yes. And they use 2-wire SBW. It is the standard ribbon cable between device and FET430UIF, but just is 4 holes for (Vcc, TEST, RST and GND). For the distance of JTAG traces on the board, it's > 1cm and capacitor value on the reset line is 2.2nF.

I will post this link to customer and invite them join this discussion.
If you have any suggestion, feel free to let us know.
Thanks for your help very much.

    Best regards,
    Janet
  • Hi Janet,

Please have the customer swap the 2.2nF capacitor for a 1nF, and see if that helps.

    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Janet,

Any update to this thread? Did swapping to a 1nF capacitor on RESET resolve the issue?

    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Dear Mike,

Thanks for your concern. Up to now, customer try to follow our suggestion and no any problem currently.
Will update if they have any new demand.
    Thanks a lot.

    Best regards,
    Janet
