MSP430F2618 Fatal Error: Could not find Device

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F2618, MSP430-FLASHER, MSP-FET

Hey,

I have been using a MSP430F2618 for a project we are working on, While uploading new code the ground wire that goes from the Emulation tool to the board broke. After this i have been getting the following error:

Fri Sep 16, 2016 18:14:19: Firmware version 3.8.0.2

Fri Sep 16, 2016 18:14:19: Interface dll version 3.8.0.2

Fri Sep 16, 2016 18:14:20: Unknown device : (OpenDevice) , Device=MSP430F2618, PwLength=0x0

Fri Sep 16, 2016 18:14:22: Fatal error: Could not find device (or device not supported) Session aborted!

When I turn on the device it seems to still run the code that was already previously installed onto it, but when I try to upload new code to the controller, it keeps giving that error.

Is the fuse blown or is there anyway to fix this microcontroller to get it working?

Thanks,
Wahaj Khan

  • Hey Wahaj,

Please state the FET tool (MSP-FET, MSP-FET430UIF, etc.), IDE (CCS, FET-Pro430, MSP430-FLASHER, etc.), and target board type (EVM, LaunchPad, custom, etc.) being used. During what part of programming (verify security fuse, flash erase/check, flash write/verify, etc.) was the ground wire disconnected? How did the wire break and has it been replaced properly? Some form of communication error still exists between the FET and board as the FET would still be able to recognize the MSP under a blown fuse condition. Do you have any other MSP430F2618 boards to test with? Try switching devices between boards and see which component the problem follows.

  • Hey Ryan,

Thanks for the Speedy Reply. So I am using a MSP-FET Flash Emulation Tool for programming and the board is custom made. It became disconnected during flash. I replaced the wire and tried to use the board again, but it still couldnt be recognized (with a replaced wire and another emulation tool). I have a few other boards lying around and they all connect without a problem. So you think something else could have gone wrong and that the microcontroller is fine?
I have looked at the CLK frequency and its at the right frequency, it seems to be running the program that is already flashed onto the controller.
If you think the actual microcontroller is fine it is also possible that one of the components around it has gone bad...I will look into those once I get more time.

Again, thanks for your speedy response...I look forward to hearing from you again.

    Thanks,
    Wahaj Khan

  • Once again, it would be worth switching MSP devices between boards and commenting on whether the issue follows the device or board.

    Ryan
